I had been marketing for a long time without success. I mostly think it was because I had no understanding of how to promote utilizing SEO or Search Engine Optimization. Yes, you can acquire scads of opt-in, double opt-in MLM leads, home business leads, internet marketing leads, insurance leads, and any other lead you can think of, spending tremendous sums of money. You may purchase an auto-responder service and send out a series of email letters to all your freshly discovered, already used, apparently fresh, absolutely interested in business opportunity leads. Yeah, right, and I still have no luck obtaining interested, eager to do business with your leads. Oh yes, a few will trickle in, but you can not call it a business, and even if they are interested, how long do they remain, a week, two weeks, maybe a month, and the reason being that you can not teach them any more than what you know. And how much revenue is your company going to make from those few leads that trickle in? Can you survive on it, or travel and purchase that gorgeous vehicle and home those alleged experts tell you they possess. That is another matter; excuse me, I forget myself in these rants I am having lately. The above is called Marketing which is the opposing kind of SEO.

You can purchase one of those internet marketing courses from one of those purportedly very successful internet marketers who solicit you all the time via your email box. You can do what I did and genuinely learn how to advertise utilizing SEO (Search Engine Optimization) (Search Engine Optimization). And it truly is not hard, but let me tell you, it is a lot of effort, so if you think you are going to get off easy and relax on the golf course because your new online company needs you to work four hours a day, you have something coming to you. Yes, you can do it later, much, much later, but at first, it will cost you your TIME and plenty of it.

Hopefully, I have primed the pump, and you are ready to listen to what SEO or Search Engine Optimization is. It is contrary to that sponsored way of collecting leads I spoke about earlier; it is about getting your leads by enhancing the quality of visitors to your website through search engines, such as Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc., which is termed natural or organic search results. This provides your site visibility and online presence, not like when you attend a conference, meaning you are there; I mean web presence, where your website gets noticed. There is a difference…you know!

You see, you want the search engines to run by your site and seek for particular terms, called “keywords,” that people could type in the Google search box while searching for anything on the web. Oh, and I am sure I do not have to tell you that the internet is where most people go when seeking a product or service, whether it is locally or internationally. The Yellow Pages does not exactly do the job today, with so many houses having access to the online, not to mention those crazy iPhones and iPods, etc. Oh yes, back to the keywords, well, the thought is that when your keywords are searched, and you have optimized your website correctly for your keywords, your site will be on the first page of Google and even better in the 1st – 4th positions and receive all that traffic that is searching using your keywords. Sounds nice, does not it? If only it would work…well, guess what, it does work, but there is a lot of effort behind the scenes to help encourage people to come and find out what you have to offer without paying for leads or utilizing lead production businesses.

So you see, the difference between Marketing and SEO is that in marketing, you pay for leads, and you advertise to them using auto-responders and qualification letters, hoping that you can persuade them to bit, much like fishing, put your hook in the water and wait. Whereas with SEO, you study how search engines function and what people seek, optimize your website by modifying its content and HTML and code to boost its relevance to your keywords, and learn how to eliminate the hurdles that hinder search engines from going to your site or crawling it as the phrase goes.

So there you have it, the difference, in my view, between the two approaches to gain visitors and why you should be practicing Search Engine Optimization. Do not get me wrong, SEO work does not end at those few steps I stated above, there is a lot more work to be done to bring your website to the front page of the search engines, but that is for another post.
